Solemates: How The Original Ugly Sandal Got A High Fashion Makeover
By Chava Kuchar
During this last year we saw every intonation of the ugly sandal on the 2019 Spring, Summer and Resort runways in the form of the iconic Teva, Suicoke and Source (Shoresh) sandals. However, it was Teva that reigned supreme with a series of epic collaborations- creating a fresh and dynamic feel for a well-established, comfortable and reasonably priced design. Teva explained that whilst this in fact maybe be the trend right now, that their sandals had “been styled by designers for years to help complete their runway looks, and New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2019 was no different”.

Originally established as a hiking and active wear shoe, Teva, the word actually means “nature” in Hebrew. In 1987, Teva applies for the first patent for it’s iconic and enduring Velcro system, creating the first modern sport sandal. Within a couple years, Teva becomes a international phenomenon received publicity and accolades for its innovative designs. In the new millennia Teva continues to evolve and innovate with collaborative designs that take it from playground to runway- bringing with it a cool and practical emancipation for women (and men’s) feet.

Although not an official collaboration, Teva explained that “we couldn’t be more excited about the tassels adorning the Teva Original Universal sandals that TOME models wore on the runway.” Each tassel was handmade by former refugee women resettled in Texas, all through Gaia, a recently (closed) long term refugee rehabilitation program. “They paired beautifully with everything from silk dip-dye dresses to striped trousers.”
